What is Alibaba Group’s mission?

Our mission is “to make it easy to do business anywhere.” Our founders started our company to champion small businesses, in the belief that the Internet would level the playing field by enabling small enterprises to leverage innovation and technology to grow and compete more effectively in the domestic and global economies.

Where are Alibaba Group’s offices located?

We maintain offices in countries and regions including China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, Russia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States.

How many people does Alibaba Group employ?

As of September 30, 2016, we had a total of 46,689 full-time employees.

What is Alibaba Group’s core business?

Alibaba Group provides the fundamental technology infrastructure and marketing reach to help merchants, brands and other businesses that provide products, services and digital content to leverage the power of the Internet to engage with their users and customers. Our businesses are comprised of core commerce, cloud computing, mobile media and entertainment, and other innovation initiatives.

Who are Alibaba Group’s customers?

Our customers include both buyers and sellers on our marketplaces, and they discover, select and transact with each other on our platform. Buyers access our marketplaces free of charge. Buyers include consumers who come to our retail marketplaces to shop for anything anytime anywhere, as well as business buyers who use our wholesale marketplaces to source products for use in their own business or for resale. Sellers use our marketplaces to establish a presence on the Internet and market products and services to hundreds of millions of consumers and other businesses. Sellers include brands, retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers. We also provide cloud computing services to a wide range of customers including merchants doing business on our marketplaces, systems integrators, mobile app developers and digital entertainment companies.

What do you mean when you refer to the “Alibaba ecosystem”?

Given the scale we have been able to achieve, an ecosystem has developed around our platforms and businesses that consists of consumers, merchants, brands, other enterprises, third-party service providers and strategic alliance partners. At the nexus of this ecosystem are our technology platform, our marketplace rules and the role we play in connecting these participants to make it possible for them to discover, engage and transact with each other and manage their businesses anytime and anywhere. Much of our effort, time and energy is spent on initiatives that are for the greater good of the ecosystem and on balancing the interests of its participants. We feel a strong responsibility for the continued development of the ecosystem and we take ownership in this development. Accordingly, we refer to this as “our ecosystem.”

 What is Alibaba Group’s long-term strategic goal?

Our long-term strategic goal is to serve two billion consumers around the world and support 10 million businesses to operate profitably. Our key initiatives to achieve this strategic goal include: globalization, rural expansion and big data/cloud computing.

What is the end goal of the AGLA program?

Alibaba Global Leadership Academy (AGLA) is a transformational talent development program dedicated to fostering the future international leaders of Alibaba and of the new economy. Through job rotations at Alibaba core business units combined with classroom and experiential training, AGLA participants will graduate equipped to serve as Alibaba’s global business leaders and cultural ambassadors, linking international markets with what is soon to become the largest economy in the world – China. AGLA graduates will comprise the foundation for Alibaba’s international business expansion.

How is AGLA program structured?

Participants will have the opportunity to live, work and thrive in China for 12 months as full-time Alibaba employees. Upon graduation from the program they will be assigned to an impactful business role in one of Alibaba’s global offices based on their interests, career alignment, and overall business need. All members will be provided with a competitive compensation and benefits package.

What backgrounds are welcome? What profile and functional expertise?

We welcome any background that may contribute to Alibaba’s globalization in the future. E.g. in the second batch, we have candidates from HR, Legal, Finance, Public Relations, Government Relations Logistics etc.

 When is the expected onboarding time?

For AGLA 2017, we are expecting associates to get onboard in July, 2017.

Can you choose your rotations?

You may indicate your preference for a Business Unit, but the final choice will be made according to the needs of each BU.

What is the intake in every batch?

That depends on business needs, but approximately 30 associates per batch.

What responsibilities will the associates have?

Responsibilities depend on business needs and the associate’s background.

What will the associates do after the program?

The end goal is for the associates to be relocated to their home country to help link Hangzhou with the rest of the world.

Do the associates need to speak Chinese?

Speaking Chinese is preferred and helpful, but not required.

 How is AGLA program structured?

There is an orientation and training program upon arrival and subsequently monthly learning modules consisting of classroom and field learning. Upon graduation from the program they will be assigned to an impactful business role in one of Alibaba’s global offices based on their interests, career alignment, and overall business need. All members will be provided with a competitive compensation and benefits package

After July 2017, when will the next batch start?

The official dates are still being decided, but the AGLA is an ongoing program and applications are welcome throughout the whole year.
